About the position
The Department of Electric Power Engineering has a vacancy for a 100% position as researcher within the field of Electricity Markets and Energy System Analysis.
The researcher position is connected to the NTNU Energy Transition Initiative (NETI), which is established in order to build a world-leading research programme focused on strategies for the transition to future sustainable energy systems.

The position reports to the Head of Department, Prof. Ole-Morten Midtgård.
Main duties and responsibilities
NETI covers several research fields related to the world’s energy challenges, and the Department of Electric Power Engineering has a key role in the research areas pertaining to electric power systems, and in particular:
- Electrification of the energy system (moving from fossil energy carriers to electricity)
- Integration of renewable energy sources and energy storage in the power system
- Design and analysis of electricity markets for power systems with high penetration of renewable energy
The researcher position will cover these research topics, which are also core research areas of the EMESP group. The researcher will be involved in the NETI research activities as well as other research projects within the group. It is expected that the researcher will be closely involved in new research proposals and seek opportunities for collaboration internally and in the NETI network (such as SINTEF, MIT, University of Maryland, TU Berlin, RWTH Aachen, and Imperial College London). The researcher will be a full member of the scientific staff at the Department of Electric Power Engineering, and will take part in activities beside research, such as teaching and relevant administrative tasks, approximately 20% over time.
The qualification requirement is a PhD within power systems, power markets, energy systems modeling, energy economics or similar. It is required that the researcher is well acquainted with power systems, operational research and renewable energy sources. The candidate must have proven skills in publishing research articles in international journals of high standards, and must be able to formulate problems into mathematical models, and implement them in computer programs, such as Matlab, Python, Julia, and Gams. The researcher will play an important role in the EMEPS group. We seek a person who has good collaborative skills and who likes to share knowledge with colleagues, collaborators and students.
Other qualificationsApplicants must have very good English language skills, written and spoken. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside EU/EEA/Switzerland must provide preliminary documentation of English language proficiency, in terms of an approved test.The following tests can be used: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) .
Further assessment of both written and oral English language skills and the ability to communicate fluently will be conducted in the continued selection process and during any interviews for all applicants.
Proficiency in a Scandinavian language will be rated positively. New members of the academic staff who do not master a Scandinavian language are expected to achieve proficiency in Norwegian within three years of employment. This proficiency should correspond to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at NTNU.

Salary and conditions
The gross salary for the position of researcher code 1109 is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 523 000 - 680 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The Department of Electric Power Engineering works closely with key players in the Norwegian electricity supply sector, who manage critical infrastructure. A comprehensive risk assessment of the candidates' research interests and potential activities related to national threat assessments will therefore also form basis for the final selection of candidates.
